STATE INSPECTION

The State of Texas NO Longer requires the Safety inspection for ANY vehicle with exception of commercial DOT inspections However an Emission Test is required ONLY for GASOLINE powered passenger vehicles that are between 2 years old to 24 years old being registered in one of 17 counties. 

In Texas, emissions testing is required in 17 counties, primarily those surrounding major metropolitan areas like Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and El Paso. These counties are Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson. Additionally, Bexar County will be added to this list in 2026

what can cause an Inspection Failure

  • The dash Malfunction Indicator light (MIL) aka.. CHECK ENGINE Light is illuminated OR does not function properly
  • Presence of Vehicle Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) reported by the Vehicle’s PCM (computer)
  • Recent Battery being disconnected for service, replacement or loss of charge OR the DTC data recently being deleted due to a recent service or repair to the vehicle.
